Week 14
Boston............ and beyond
This week there has not been a lot of work. Matt and I had a lot of organizing to do so Vitale was good enough to allow us time to wrap everything up and sort out our own stuff. I have had major luggage issues. I was going to send everything home via postage but my lack of trust for government institutions had persuaded me to keep it with me.

I bought the largest suitcase I could find and I am going to store it in London and pick it up on the way home. I have had to throw out a few of my old clothes cause they just didn’t fit.

2 of my mates from Melbourne are traveling the world for 6 months and decided to start at Boston. My offer of free accommodation I think persuaded them. They arrived Monday from 3 days in Vegas and were a little the werse for wear. Daniel (Guns) and Alex (Zoonah) are their names. I play footy with Guns and meet Zoonah through him.

It has been a welcome site to have a few more aussies around. On Wednesday night Matt and I took them to hooters. We tried to eat the 50 piece wings special but just fell short. Not a bad effort though. Had a few beers then headed home.

Thursday night we also headed out for a few beers, we decided to try downtown Boston but the clubs were pretty ordinary on a Thursday night so we ended up at the pub in our building again.

Tonight (Friday night) we are going out after work with the guys from Vitale to have some going away drinks and say goodbye to everyone. I have to be at the airport by 11:00 am so It can’t be too big.... I have to finish packing in the morning.

I have had a great time in Boston but now I am off to South Beach in Miami for 5 days then Cancun in Mexico for a week. Looking forward to the sun. Although, the last week has been high teen’s and pure sunshine, really quite warm so as we leave the weather becomes really nice.... typical.

Week 13
Boston
Another week in the office and the pace was fairly slow. I have been working on the same client so I have got my daily routine worked out,

Matt got back on Wednesday so I had to clean the place up. I had let it go a bit.
On Sat the old man came up from Connecticut and we just passed time, went up to the shops. We got home by about 4pm and cleaned the place up for our party.

We had decided to throw a going away party as it was our last full weekend in Boston. We had been advertising our party for a few weeks so we would get a good turn up and some of the boys here decided it was going to be a theme party, with the theme being Golf Pro’s and Tennis Ho’s.

Matt and I donned our finest golfing attire and after filling the fridge we started sucking back the booze. We cranked the music and by the time 11pm came around the we ended up with probably about 40 people in our apartment. There were some good outfits (from the boys, the girls left a little to be desired).

DJ Old fella and G Unit were cutting the beats on my itunes and the party was pumping when there was a knock at the door.......the concierge, with a disgusted look on his face. He said there had been complaints about the noise. I said, don’t worry mate, we are leaving in ten minutes and joined the party again. Half an hour later, he was back and I left Matt to deal with him. He somehow got rid of him but he was back in 10 minutes... filthy with us. He said he had called the police and they were coming.

Well this only served inspire the crowd and by around 12.30 all the beers had run out so we headed downstairs. Matt took one group to the place and walked in, Old Fella and I went to a bar across the street with some other people from the party as we had not been to this bar, Jose McIntyres. I wasn’t allowed in cause I didn’t have my passport and one of the other guys was too drunk so we then ventured across to the other side of the street to another bar called Coogan’s.

The bar closed about 2 and as I had not finished my beer I decided to take it with me so our crew returned to my place to find Matt and just about all the other guys back at our house. I thought we had got rid of these guys but apparently not.

Muethang had passed out in Matt’s bed, everyone took it in turns to do something stupid to him. Some Irish guy from PWC walked into our apartment to see what all the noise was and it ends up PWC had a few people on secondment in our building. By this time everyone was leaving and the Irish bloke invited us to his place where they were cooking up a massive feed. Matt, Jason and I went down to their place and ate all their food.
Jason passed in their lounge room, then we decided to head home.

Woke up with a head ache and the place was a mess. I have lost my keys, including the rental car keys....Great. Also, it appears the Irish guys took to Jason with a razor when he was asleep so he awoke to an unpleasant surprise. I must say I felt bad for him but watching Jason having his eyebrow drawn back on his face in Macy’s by a cosmetic girl was without a doubt the funniest moment of the weekend, perhaps the month.

We went to Fanueil Hall in the afternoon and inside the second floor. It was built in 1742 and extended around 1812, it is quite an amazing piece of work. There is a painting 30 foot by 16 foot of the debating of the declaration of independence. It took the artist 5 years to paint. I’ll try and get a photo and put it on the Blog. That’s about all for the week. Boston is starting to warm up with temperatures 15c and above forecast for our last week...........6 days to go an counting, Ah Miami!

Week 12
Boston and St Pat’s Day

This week I was in the office. Just preparing financial statements and cleaning up audit files, I thought. As it turned out some of the work that we thought had been done hadn't, so I spent most of the week finishing stuff off. I had Wednesday off as the cold weather finally got me and I was having trouble shaking my cold.

Matt was away this week and turned into the laziest person. My shit was all over the place and I basically extended my bedroom to the lounge room. Looks like a bomb hit it. But who cares I had the place to myself for a week.

I woke up Friday morning and there we people everywhere downstairs. There was a TV and radio crew broadcasting from a pub downstairs. Kate Moloney flew in at lunchtime from St Louis and I picked her up and dropped her stuff off at her house. Then I went back to work and Molones amused herself.

I went to the pub with Mike Landenberger (Berger) about 4pm that arvo and had a few St Pats day celebratories. Then I convinced Berger to come out and we dropped by my place and picked up Molones then caught up with some of Landenberger’s mates. All the pubs had massive cover charges and huge lines. It was crazy. We found the pub where Bergers mates was and got in. Then we just started smacking piss and before you knew it I was spastic. Needed a pizza, check the photos.

On Saturday we walked around Boston a bit. I played the tour guide. Bumped into an anti war parade. Went inside the state library, pretty nice. We also walked the freedom trail. It is 2.5 mil (4km trail) that walks through the major landmarks and significant historical places and events of Boston. The Trail is 16 historical sites and covers two and a half centuries of America's most significant past. A red brick or painted line connects the sites on the Trail and serves as a guide. I have provided an online tour in the photos below.

Sat night we went to the North end, which is 5 minutes walk (although we took a cab cause it was cold). The North end is like Little Italy, and has lots of Italian restuarants etc. I had veal and Risotto, It was pretty good. Then just went to the pub downstairs and observed the locals. One comment is the majority of them had super short hair, army cut specials!

Didn’t have a massive night sat night as Landenberger and Hurley had a party at their place in South Boston. On the Sunday following St Pats day every year there is a street parade and South Boston gets pretty crazy. People just walking around the place everywhere and drinking on the street. Pretty cool, but freakin cold!

The boys had a few kegs and their place was pumping. The cooked up a massive roast of cornbeef and cabbage. Thought I’d skip that one, anyway, there’s a meal in every beer! The boys had green dye next to the keg and on every beer refill it was mandatory to include a drop of dye. SO everyone was drinking green beer. Pretty good novelty value. Friday night we had stolen a few green budweiser and kilkeny signs from the pubs so I decided to wear them around the neck like the bloke from public enemy (except mine wasn’t a clock). Also had the viking had from Mardi Gra so I was in the spirit of things.

Heaps of guys were at the party from Vitale and they took care of me so there was plenty of blokes I knew and it was a good day. Not sure if their place has recovered yet though......

It got to the stage where I was pretty boozed so I took myself home via the pizza store and after having a quick nap on the couch I awoke to my uneaten pizza which I soon made short work of then back to bed. Lets just say Monday was a slow day.

16. Bunker Hill
The Bunker Hill Monument stands tall at 221 feet. It stands on the site of the first major battle of the American Revolution, fought on Breed's Hill, June 17, 1775. Important to the British occupation of Boston was control of the high ground near the harbor. When colonial forces chose to fortify Charlestown, they bypassed the more dominant "Bunker Hill" and dug in on Breed's Hill which was lower and closer to the water. "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes" is the legendary order attributed to Colonel William Prescott to make sure that each shot would count. The poorly trained and ill prepared colonial forces repelled two major assaults by the British Army before retreating. Almost half of the British soldiers were either killed or injured. Although the colonists lost the battle, their bravery and strong showing against the British encouraged them to fight on.

The Charlestown Navy Yard was built on what was once Mouton's or Morton's Point, the landing place of the British army prior to the Battle of Bunker Hill. It was one of the first shipyards built in the United States. During its 174 year history, hundreds of ships were built, repaired and modernized, including the World War II destroyer USS Cassin Young. Today, thirty acres of the Navy Yard are preserved by the National Park Service as part of Boston National Historical Park

15. USS Constitution
It is the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world. It was first launched in 1797. Constitution is one of six ships ordered for construction by George Washington to protect America's growing maritime interests. The ships greatest glory came during the war of 1812 when she defeated four British frigates and earned her the nickname "Old Ironsides," because cannon balls glanced off her thick hull. The ship was restored in 1927 with contributions from the nation's school children.

14. Copp's Hill Burying Ground
Is Boston's second oldest burying ground. It was first founded in 1659 as Windmill Hill. The area got its name because a shoemaker, William Copp, once owned the land. Thousands of artisans, craftspeople, and merchants are buried on the Hill. Additionally, thousands of blacks who lived in the "New Guinea" community at the base of Copp's Hill are buried in unmarked graves on the Snowhill Street side. Also interred at Copp's Hill are the Mather family of ministers; shipyard owner Edmund Hartt; Robert Newman, best know for placing the signal lanterns in the steeple of the "Old North" Church on the eve of the Battle of Lexington and Concord; Shem Drowne, the weathervane maker who crafted the grasshopper atop Faneuil Hall; and Prince Hall, the anti-slavery activist and founder of the Black Masonic Order.

Old North Church: Known as "Christ Church in the City of Boston," this Episcopal church was built in 1723 and is Boston's oldest Church building. 13. Paul Revere House
Built around 1680, this house is the oldest building in downtown Boston, and served as the home of Paul Revere and his family from 1770 to 1800. Revere left here for his famous �midnight ride.� This site is owned and operated by The Paul Revere Memorial Association.

12. Faneuil Hall
It has served as a marketplace and a meeting hall since 1742. Funding was provided by a wealthy merchant, Peter Faneuil, for the construction and local artisan to create the grasshopper weather vane that still perches on the building's cupola. Inspiring speeches by Samuel Adams and other patriots were given that eventually led to independence from the British. Faneuil Hall was expanded in 1806 by Charles Bulfinch. When Boston became a city the use of Faneuil Hall as a government meeting place came to an end, but it was still regularly used. Today, the first floor is still used as a lively marketplace and the second floor is a meeting hall where many Boston City debates are held. The fourth floor is maintained by the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company.

11. Boston Massacre
In front of the Old State House, a circle of cobblestones commemorates the Boston Massacre. At this site, tensions between the colonists and British soldiers erupted into violence on March 5, 1770. A minor dispute between a wigmaker's young apprentice and a British sentry turned into a riot. The relief soldiers that came to the aid of the British were met by an angry crowd of colonists who hurled snowballs, rocks, clubs, and insults. The soldiers fired into the crowd and killed five colonists. Samuel Adams and other patriots called the event a "massacre".

10. Old State House
Also known as Boston's "Towne House", the Old State House dates back to 1713. It was the center of all political life and debate in colonial Boston. On July 18, 1776, citizens gathered in the street to hear the Declaration of Independence read from the building's balcony, the first public reading in Massachusetts. The Royal Governor presided here until the new State House was built on Beacon Hill in 1798. Today, the building is run by The Bostonian Society as a Boston history museum.

9. The Old South Meeting House
It was built in 1729 as a Puritan house of worship. It was also the largest building in colonial Boston. The Old South Meeting House is best known for the site of where the Boston Tea Party began. In the winter of 1773, more than 5,000 colonists gathered at Old South in a meeting to protest the tax on tea. After many hours of debate, Samuel Adams announced, "This meeting can do nothing more to save the country!" Protestors stormed out of the Old South Meeting House to the waterfront where they dumped three shiploads of tea into the Boston harbor. They changed American history forever. Today, the Old South Meeting House is a museum where they recreate the tea party debates.

8. Former site of the Old Corner Bookstore
Many famous books were published here, including The Scarlet Letter, Walden, and the Atlantic Monthly magazine. The Bookstore was built in 1712 as an apothecary shop, office and home of Thomas Crease. It is one of Boston's oldest surviving structures. Today, The Boston Globe Store which was founded by The Boston Globe newspaper occupies the building and specializes in New England and travel books and maps.

7. The school
The first public school in America was established by Puritan settlers in 1635 in the home of Schoolmaster Philemon Pormont and was later moved to School Street. A portrait statue of Benjamin Franklin overlooks the site of the oldest public school in America which Franklin, Samuel Adams, and John Hancock once attended. Franklin's place of birth was just one block away on Milk Street, across from the Old South Meeting House. The Boston Latin School no longer stands in its once downtown location, but is now located in Boston's Fenway neighborhood.

6. Kings Burial Ground
The burying ground is the final resting place for many colonists, including John Winthrop, the Colony's governor; Hezekiah Usher, the colony's first printer; Mary Chilton, the first women to step off the Mayflower (the first ship to dock in America).

5. King's Chapel
Is the oldest burying place in Boston proper. The Peter Harrison designed church was constructed on land taken from the burying ground. To insure the presence of the Church of England in America, King James II ordered an Anglican parish to be built in Boston. Since none of the colonists were interested in selling suitable land for the Church, the King ordered Governor Andros to seize a corner of the burying ground for the Church of England.

4. Granary Burying Ground
Founded in 1660, the Granary is the third oldest burying ground in Boston proper. In 1737, when grain was stored where the present Park Street Church stands, the burying ground was renamed the Granary. Along with Massachusetts Governors, Clergymen, and Mayors, three signers of the Declaration of Independence are buried here. It is the resting place of Samuel Adams, parents of Benjamin Franklin, Other Boston dignitaries and Mother Goose.

3. Park Street Church
The site of the old town granary where grain was kept before the Revolution, dates back to 1809. This Evangical Church of "firsts" is the location of the first Sunday school in 1818 and the first prison aid in 1824. On July 4, 1829, William Lloyd Garrison gave his first public anti-slavery speech here and two years later, "My Country 'Tis of Thee" was sung for the first time by the church children's choir.

2 Massachusetts State House
Built in 1798, the "new" State House is located across from the Boston Common on the top of Beacon Hill. The land was once owned by Massachusetts first elected governor, John Hancock. Charles Bullfinch, the leading architect of the day, designed the building. The dome, originally made out of wood shingles, is now sheathed in copper and covered by 23 karat gold. In the House of Representatives chambers hangs a wooden codfish that signifies the importance of the fishing industry to the Commonwealth

1. Boston Common
The starting point of the Freedom Trail. The Boston Common is known to be one of the oldest public parks in the country. The park is almost 50 acres in size. Today, Boston Common is the anchor for the Emerald Necklace, a system of connected parks that winds through many of Boston's neighborhoods. The "Common" has been used for many different purposes throughout its long history. Until 1830, cattle grazed the Common, and until 1817, public hangings took place here. British troops camped on Boston Common prior to the Revolution and left from here to face colonial resistance at Lexington and Concord in April, 1775. l and serves as a guide.

Week 11
Boston and New York
This week at work was not to bad. Back onsite at the Power company but I was in charge so we were working my hours. The work was pretty easy so I just cruised. Matt had no work and was continuously emailing me until he found out he had to go to Germany for 10 days as his client had a German subsidiary that needed internal testing done.

The guys in New York were out of town this weekend so we organized to stay at their house in NYC for the weekend.

We left work at around 4pm and traffic was hell. Friday night traffic is bad anywhere and Boston roads are pretty crazy. We stopped in at Connecticut and picked up Jason. Jason is living in a Hilton apartment but unfortunately there is no Paris. His place is pretty sweet though. Fifty Cent owns a massive crib about 1 mile up the road. It used to be Mike Tyson’s but he had to sell it and fifty bought it. The real G Unit wanted to check out the G Unit’s place but we didn’t have time.

Matt had a kip in the back seat and The Old Fella navigated me into Manhattan. We managed to find a park on 12 St about 2 blocks from where we were staying and we unloaded then went for a walk to times square. By the time we got Times Square it was almost midnight, so we got some food and just walked around. There were stretch hummers everywhere and every other kind of crazy car. There was even a party bus and we tried to get on to catch a lift back to our house, but to no avail. Was reminiscent of the Bus Ditch and I chased in Sorrento.

We got home about 1.30 and I slept until about 10. Saturday was a cracking day, about 15c and sunny. We got up, had a massive brunch and made our way all the way downtown to Battery Park. We wanted to see the statue of Liberty but there were heaps of lines and they were massive. Cause the weather was so good everyone was out and the line was going to be at least and hour. We also went to Ground zero again. Still a massive hole. This time we hung around and read all the signs, pretty interesting.

Then we went up fifth Avenue to the Empire State Building. There was a 2 hour wait for the viewing deck but if you took a virtual helicopter ride and the deck observation combo the wait was only 30 minutes. Obviously that cost a bit more but it was worth it. The virtual tour was a helicopter ride over New York which was narrated by..... Kevin Bacon. Looks like things have been a bit flat for Kevin since Hollow Man. The ride was pretty good though they explained all the main points of NYC.

The view was awesome. Say no more. I took a crap load of photos. Looking straight down was a bit daunting though. You realize the size of the place, massive.

Then we drove Matt to the airport as he was flying to Germany for work for 10 days. Sat night traffic in NYC was nuts and JFK airport was massive also. It took us an hour to get a park back at NYC but we got one. Then Jase and I set about demolishing some Jim Beam and hit a couple of pubs. We just took the piss out of heaps of Americans and some locals loved us. They thought we were hilarious so we lapped it up.

Got home late and I was on baggygreen getting the Aus V SA cricket scores thinking Australia can’t lose this game..... What the f_ _ _ happened there? Old fella passed out hanging off the couch and that’s where he stayed.

Had lunch a nice looking cafe and sitting in the both next to us was Craig Hutchison. Unfortunately he and his mate looked like they were coming off big nights so he wasn’t able to give us any good scoops except that Nathan Ablett is supposed to be pretty good. That’s not really a scoop Hutchy! KL has given me better info than that.

We went up fifth Avenue and to uptown and central park on Sunday. It was a little overcast but still fairly warm, relative, about 10c. Central Park was awesome, massive park right in the middle of the city. It is so quiet, quite amazing really. There is all sorts of stuff in the park too, a lake, a reservoir, a cafe, lawns, swings, a zoo, an old castle, statues a plenty, and I could go on........ i could just start naming athletes alphabetically and I will Aldo, Alonzo, Adrianna... Special. Ok I don’t know where I was going with that one.

We then walked down 5th Avenue home and just about every designer brand was there, Gucci, Tiffany, Versace, Bvlgari and the stores went on and on. We found the Trump Tower and Jason Got Fired.

We also found playboy headquarters. And then there were the churches. There was 3 church’s within a few hundred metres. They were impressive but by far and away the best was St Paul’s. It is the most well known and it was the biggest. We went inside and there was a prayer on. No cameras allowed inside which is a shame cause the place was amazing. Massive inside with huge stain glass windows, marble floors and the detail on the place was incredible. Dropped Jason back in C town and got home by 11pm. I was stuffed and slept like a baby.

St Pauls church from the front. Built Around 1639, the detail and sculptures awesome, nothing compared to inside though.

The famous St Paul's Church. Given my religion is football, I was in awe of this church. We went inside but you couldn't take photos. But this was awesome. Hard to put into words. Bring on the Vatican!

Well what can I say. When it come to shopping obey the sign. Appproapriate for 5th Avenue, a shoppers paradise. I have heard the fine is big also.
